Karate Kids Classes – Fun for Ages 5 – 10
Our Karate Kids Program
The Karate Kids program at Blue Wave is a real martial arts program with authentic and traditional roots but packaged for children. Stemming from the original Tae Kwon Do Institute in Korea, our program utilizes modern teaching methods in a warm and upbeat environment. In Karate Kids we teach real self-defense skills but we also put a lot of emphasis on internal qualities for our students. Highly important topics we cover are character development, physical fitness, leadership, and individual responsibility. We also stress concepts like awareness, discipline, and self-confidence to help your child be successful in life. In our Karate Kids classes we always have adult instruction by the Master. Additionally, in each class, we always have volunteer instructors who are former Karate Kids that have come back to help. These volunteers are peers of a similar age and can relate well to the students in the Karate Kids class. We like to see our Karate Kids cooperate with higher ranking students that are their same age in hopes of inspiring them to earn their Black Belt. For beginners, we have new sessions starting up all the time. The Beginner Karate Kids class meets at 4:30 p.m. one day a week for 6 weeks. After your child completes the Beginner Session they will transition into the Open Karate Kids Class which meets at 5:00 p.m. From our schedule you may choose as many Open Classes as you like. A good (recommended) schedule is to pick 2 or 3 days a week (as consistently as possible) which will help your child learn more efficiently. However, there is no minimum attendance requirement. Who is the Karate Kids Instructor?
David Blevins, a 6th Degree Black Belt and Tae Kwon Do Master is the owner of Blue Wave and teaches the Karate Kids program. He has won countless martial arts competitions and championships across the country and has been teaching in this area for almost 30 years. Highly respected by local educators he is definitely a “kid” person and enjoys every single child in our Karate Kids classes. His priorities are making sure your child learns real martial art in a safe environment and has fun doing so. You owe it to yourself to come and watch a Karate Kids class to see him in action.
Is it Different From Other Martial Art Programs?
What sets Karate Kids apart from other martial art programs is that we use up to date and thoughtful teaching methods in a child-friendly class. We do this in a way that still emphasizes the traditional and authentic approach of a classic martial art system. The format is high-energy with very little down time. And, we try to have a lot of fun with the kids while teaching them martial arts skills. In addition to learning skills and achieving belts, Karate Kids have the opportunity to participate in Summer Camps, Movie Nights,Tournaments, and many other exciting extra events. Our job is to motivate your child to become great and have a great time along the way.
What Will My Child Learn in Karate Kids?
First, your child will learn some basic fundamentals of technique. Proper body position as well as the physical mechanics for true skill building. Then, we put that basic technique to work in ancient patterns called forms (or Kata). Later, after they have learned proper execution and control they are introduced to a very simple defensive drill called one-step sparring. As they progress, many more intermediate and advanced techniques, forms and sparring drills are taught. Also, besides learning the martial art movements, your child will become more active and fit. In the process of learning techniques, the class activities promote a healthy lifestyle while we improve strength, balance, agility, quickness, endurance, and flexibility. But, most importantly, your child will begin to posses the qualities it takes to be successful in life. All it takes is a bit of time and some patience (from the parents 😉 of course). And, by the way, there is a button below that links to our full class schedule including fitness classes for mom and dad.
“Tae Kwon Do has been a really fun experience for me. I’ve made new friendships and have learned new skills. For me, this class has taken away most of my anger and has replaced it with peace. As of right now, I am a green belt and am eager to go back every week. The tests can be a bit nerve-wrecking, but getting nervous sometimes is healthy for you. Everyone is always welcomed by the great people here. I’ve loved this place since I started, and I think other people will, too.”

“Blue Wave Martial Arts training has provided my boys with improved physical coordination, self-discipline and increased social awareness. They are proud of their accomplishments and look forward to one day becoming black blacks. The confidence they feel when they earn a new belt or skill carries over into all aspects of their lives. They know they can be successful at whatever they focus on accomplishing and that is a tremendous skill to provide your children. Thanks, Blue Wave.”
“In a hectic scheduled filled world, the Karate Kids Program at Blue Wave provides a much needed serenity for our young son. Master Blevins does an amazing job at connecting with each child on a personal level in a group setting. The children are taught self confidence, mutual respect and at the same time, having fun while developing their motor skills. I am glad we chose Blue Wave! We truly love it!”
