Martial Arts Classes
Traditional Tae Kwon Do
Our Tae Kwon Do Program
While there are many styles of martial arts popping up and many more storefront academies opening all the time, our Tae Kwon Do program at Blue Wave has a long-standing and well regarded reputation. This is for 2 reasons. First, we have been teaching Tae Kwon Do in St. Charles County and the St. Louis metro area since 1989. That’s nearly 30 years under the direction of Master David Blevins without interruption. Secondly, our style of martial art is from the original Tae Kwon Do school in Seoul, Korea with Master Blevins being just the 3rd generation since the inception of the art. Blue Wave (under the direction of Master Blevins) is well known to local businesses, fire/law enforcement, and professional educators across the area because of his commitment to excellence and student development. We have a no-nonsense approach to the authentic training method and are known for the technical superiority and ferocity of our martial arts students. We adhere to the traditional components of the originators which are to use our training for character development and peace of mind but to become unstoppable if we ever need to defend ourselves. Most classes have a healthy dose of fundamentals practice, self-defense applications, and several different varieties of sparring (depending on the level of the student). In addition to a myriad of physical skills, students are taught leadership, awareness, teamwork, and patience. We do earn belts, but every single person who trains does so at their own pace. There is no hurry to achieve the next rank or colored belt. Higher levels of attainment come as a result of hard work and a steadfast approach. Who is the Master?
My name is David Blevins and I am a 6th Degree Black Belt and Tae Kwon Do Master. I am the sole owner of Blue Wave and I teach the Tae Kwon Do program. Originally from Kansas City, I have had many successes in numerous martial arts competitions and championships across the country and I have been teaching since I became a Black Belt in 1982. My school has been in operation in this area for almost 30 years and I have Never Used Contracts. I try to always make classes interesting and informative (although they are also a bit tiring). And, my aim is to bring a serious air of authenticity to my teaching that is inspiring without being intimidating. The approach to martial arts here is to be welcoming to every kind of person from every kind of background. But, there is never any question about the kind of martial art student I am trying to develop. I am looking for the kind of person who is willing to work and wants to be on the path towards improvement and self-development. Don’t worry, toughness comes in time! Tae Kwon Do For Self-Defense
Traditional martial art training is much more than merely memorizing moves and techniques. Variations and applications of each skill and movement are thoroughly and exhaustively examined and practiced in class. Over weeks and months a thorough understanding of the defensive/combat scenario takes shape in the mind of the student. The end result is a body hardened by the training. Your reflexes are honed by the repetition. You will own an understanding of the defensive process and accompanying strategies in differing situations. Tae Kwon Do has historically been the “go-to” martial art and self-defensive system for military and law enforcement around the globe including the U.S. Marine Corps and the Korean ROK troops. It is interesting to note that Master Blevins has instructed public service and military personnel on more than one occasion. You owe it to yourself to find out why our style has been around and been in use for so long.
We like to give our beginners a great start by placing them in a small class situation with only a few other beginners. For six weeks you will be introduced to what kinds of things are expected in class and what the class format is like. Once your technical fundamentals are in place and you become more self-assured you will get to move into the open class. New Beginners Class sessions start from time to time. Master Blevins is an example of a dedicated and effective Tae-Kwon-Do instructor. When my son Alex began classes at Blue Wave Martial Arts and Fitness, he was only 9 years old. Master Blevins utilized a teaching style that demanded that students give their best effort but remained cognizant of building my child’s confidence in himself and his abilities. As my child has progressed he has become more self-motivated and learned to establish goals. When he earned his black belt the pride he felt in himself was shared by all the instructors and students who have shared his journey. I credit Master Blevins commitment to excellence for helping shape my son into amazing young man he is becoming.

At Blue Wave Martial Arts, I have found motivation, confidence and fitness but more importantly, best friends and family. No matter the class, be it martial arts, cross training or kick boxing, my fellow classmates keep each other inspired and driven. We are there to pick each other up or push each other to do more both inside and outside of class. I love going to any of the classes and am never bored, but I have been tired, sweaty and sore on most occasions. Master Blevins has changed me into a more confident and thinner person, and my Blue Wave family has made me respected and loved.
