Rewards of Teaching
Rewards of Teaching
by Kennedy Fitzgibbon
The Karate Kubs program has opened my eyes to the huge rewards of teaching can bring, both for myself and for my students. It has brought me countless new knowledge that has reaped rewards even in my own tae kwon do training. I’ve had challenges, found solutions in class, and had to be flexible and make changes on the spot. Meanwhile, as I’ve I have gotten to know my students, they have taught me how they learn. I have worked to make my teaching style fit all of their individual needs and help them to be successful and grow as little martial artists during my weekly class!
Until last week however, I had not taken a step back and truly noticed all the huge improvements and changes they have made since we first met. I thought back to our first class together and where they were then, and realized that they are entirely different students now than they were when we started. It is amazing to say that I am responsible for making those changes. I made a difference – even if it may be small- in these children’s lives. Not only did I teach them something, but it is something that I love. I believe martial arts can make a huge difference in your life. The rewards of tae kwon do training are countless whether you be a teacher, student, or both! It has become an integral part of my life. Martial Arts has helped me to become confident, focused, strong both physically and mentally, and has formed friendships that will be lifelong. To be able to teach these kids something that can truly make a positive impact on their lives is the most rewarding feeling I can imagine.
Next week my students will take their completion test, and be awarded their certificates of accomplishment and I couldn’t be more proud! I hope to see them to all continue their learning in session 2. I can’t wait to see all they will accomplish as we continue to build on their skills! Not only have I seen their Karate techniques improve, but so much more! Their confidence, sportsmanship, listening and lining up skills, counting, teamwork and directional skills… I could go on and on. I am excited to get to continue making a difference in young people’s lives and can’t wait to get to know my next session of students.
