Training With Family
Training Together With Family

I am so lucky that I get to train together with my family at Blue Wave. My dad is the reason that I originally had an interest in training in Tae Kwon Do. He was a black belt when he was my age and loved it. When I started training at Blue Wave I knew I was going to love it. I trained by myself at Blue Wave until around purple belt, then my little brother Riley started joined with me and started training. I remember his first day, he wouldn’t even step on the training floor, and he did NOT want to go barefoot. He was so nervous and I worked with him and taught him high block and got him to step out onto the floor. Now he is a purple belt and has decided he wants to come to class 4 times a week so he can earn his brown belt.
Next, I got my mom and Serenity to start. My mom was funny to watch as a beginner, just because she felt silly. We are so similar so I always enjoy watching her learn in class. I could tell she felt a little uncomfortable in the uniform, and standing in front of everyone doing skills she didn’t completely know yet. Now she is a yellow belt! I also really enjoy having my cousin Serenity in class to train with. I know from personal experience that it is hard to start an activity like Tae Kwon Do as a teenager, and she started at about the same age I did. I loved watching Serenity test for her white belt. She has a real natural talent for Tae Kwon Do and already has way better aerial kicks than I do!. I love practicing sparring with her and pushing her to do her best even when she hates me for it.
Finally we got dad hooked in and have all of us training together. I knew he would love it because he always loved Tae Kwon Do, it was just hard for him to think about starting completely over. However, he got hooked again really fast as I expected he would. Watching him compete in the tournament was so awesome. He is already a green belt now, and constantly giving us a hard time if we do kickboxing instead of Tae Kwon Do. I am so proud of all they have accomplished and can’t wait to see them all continuing their journey.
My family and I are all very different. Different ages, interests, and schedules- so it is nice to have a common thing that we all can do together and have fun! It’s so cool to get to be a part of their learning and watch them come up in the ranks. We sometimes have similar challenges as we train together, for example none of us are very good at looking at our target and we always get corrected on it. I get to watch them go through a lot of the same struggles and victories that I did. We have so many great memories together from class and at tournaments or other fun events all because of Tae Kwon Do. Tae Kwon Do is a great way to bring people together and strengthen bonds. Especially since, now that I live on my own, I don’t see my family as much. Training together and going to class as a family is a great chance to spend quality time.
